How to take care of your braces

We recommend brushing your teeth and braces after each meal you eat and flossing between your teeth at least once a day. Orthodontic appliances make it more difficult to thoroughly clean your teeth, so it’s really important to be diligent with your brushing and flossing throughout treatment to avoid plaque build-up and decalcification, which can lead to cavities. We recommend using Tooth Mousse Plus, a topical paste that contains calcium and phosphate as well as fluoride. Using this product helps to pump minerals into your enamel which decreases the risk of decalcification.

It’s possible to brush your teeth and braces well with your normal toothbrush, but there are other cleaning tools you can use to help clean your teeth more thoroughly with ease. An electric toothbrush can make it easier to reach surfaces of the teeth under the wire and next to brackets. We recommend using little interdental brushes to clean hard-to-reach areas. There are a couple of options to help make flossing with braces easier such as superfloss and floss threaders.

There are certain types of food that can damage your braces. Try to avoid sticky and hard foods. Foods like apples and carrots are fine, as long as you cut them up into bite-size pieces. If you do knock off a bracket or damage your wire, come get it fixed at the earliest convenient time.
