Brace Yourself at Northside Orthodontics

Braces are the most common appliance used for orthodontic treatment. Braces are made up of brackets, which are the attachments on each tooth, as well as a series of high-tech wires and o-rings to hold the wire into the brackets.

How do braces work?

Braces put gentle forces on the teeth, moving them into the desired position. Your braces will be adjusted periodically, working through a series of high-tech wires, ensuring your teeth move efficiently and correctly. Treatment time varies from person to person; however, an average treatment time is 18-24 months.

After your braces are removed, you will need to have retainers to ensure your teeth don’t move. Most patients will have a small custom-made wire bonded behind the front six teeth to keep the teeth aligned and a customised, removable clear retainer to keep the teeth in position.

When's the best time to start Orthodontic Treatment?

Braces are beneficial to both adults and children alike. The best age for children to begin orthodontic treatment varies depending on their individual needs.

Northside Orthodontics recommends seeing children from 8 years of age for an initial assessment so that treatment can be started at the ideal time.

Adult patients can start orthodontics at any age but may require a longer treatment time, as they have denser bone structure than children; however, the results are just as effective. You are never too old for braces.

Types of Braces

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are still one of the most effective orthodontic treatments available.

Stainless steel braces are the metal type of braces most commonly used. The brackets are small and can have coloured o-rings on them.

Modern braces are much smaller and less noticeable than they used to be. With lots of different options for colour combinations, you can customise your braces to your liking!

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic or clear braces offer the same benefits as conventional braces, work in the same way and have the same components, however, the brackets are tooth-coloured in appearance and are therefore less noticeable.

Clear ceramic braces may appeal to patients who are concerned about the aesthetic aspect of orthodontic treatment. During your consultation, our doctors will provide you with visual models of our bracket systems in order to address any concerns you may have with the appearance of braces.
