The Necessity of Retention

Scientific evidence has demonstrated that the face continually changes throughout life. Without proper retention, the teeth are at risk of moving out of the alignment you worked so hard to achieve!

Different Types of Retainers

BONDED RETAINERS

A bonded retainer is a wire that is permanently fixed behind the upper and lower anterior (front) teeth. There are a few different styles of bonded retainers and your orthodontist will prescribe which style suits your teeth and bite best.

CLEAR REMOVABLE
RETAINERS

The clear removable retainer, also known as a Truform, covers all surfaces of the teeth, helping to maintain arch width and prevent tilting.  The Truform can be made for the upper and lower arch and can go over a bonded retainer for added retention. Patients are required to wear this retainer full time for the first six weeks(remove to eat, drink and brush teeth) and nights only thereafter.

ACRYLIC REMOVABLE
RETAINERS

Less commonly prescribed, Acrylic Retainers are made up of acrylic material on the palate with an imbedded wire that runs along the front of the teeth.  Your orthodontist will advise how often you will need to wear this type of retainer.
